Oscar Tank-55

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Could be protein foam. Is there a message in it like this: "Day 53. Tank still too small. If you can read this, please help me *cough*."? Could be indicative of something.

Easiest way I've found (bettas get this, too) is to lightly drag a good, thick paper towel across the surface. And do it fast because you don't want much of that paper towel getting in your tank. Also, think about what you've been feeding him. If you give him greasy food, he'll make greasy poo. Bad for his liver, too. The oil/bubbles won't harm him as long as there is good surface aeration, but you'll want to make sure the nitrates stay below 20 as well for long-term health.

There wouldn't be any residue from having cleaned the tank, would there? Any soap-cleaned articles? Just have to ask because I'd be dumb not to.

Good that he's small! Keep an eye on your parameters and be ready to upgrade when he hits about 8".

It's the same bubbles that bettas give off when they are ready to mate...:D:naughty:

Last week, I gave him his first goldfish and he enjoyed it big time:popcorn:.

He get's for food: cichild pellets:drool:, lunch- blood worms;), and brime shrimp:nilly:.

Hey man im sure youve been given the lecture about goldfish being bad for your oscars cause of parasites and yada yada yada, so i wont go into that. But for the bubbles, I was told that it's a sign your water is nice and oxygenated. Now I'm not the most knowledgeable fish keeper on this forum by any means I'm just saying thats what ive been told. Knifegill is a really smart fish keeper so I'd probably take his advice over mine.

It's best to take everyone's input as a serious contribution. Unless they're just silly. In the end what you do is your own choice. But +1 on NO goldfish. They are negative nutrition. The equivalent of a McDouble minus the lettuce. If you're dead set on feeding fish, go tropical. You can breed your own guppies for very little money and feel secure knowing they are clean. Guppies also do not contain thiaminase, unlike goldfish.

i would lessen the amount of bloodworms and brineshrimp you feed as they will muck up your water quick, i would only feed them like 3x a week max and other times feed pellets (also brine shrimp aren't really that nutritous) i would go with fresh stuff like crickets, mealworms and earthworms as supplements over brineshrimp and bloodworms, raw shrimp thawed out also makes a great treat that helps them grow fast but i would only feed this maybe 2x a week (and of course all these supplements dirty up the water faster than pellets so would need to make sure to keep eye on parameters)

as for the bubbles, what kind of filter are you running? air bubbles within your water column mean good aeration but foam forming at the top means you don't have enough circulation moving the water at the top, i get this in my small hospital tank when i have to put in a divider and the filter cant fully circulate the top layer of water on the other side of the divider
