Hey guys! Long story short, my tiger oscar has been put through a lot of abuse from other fish so I finally have him alone in a 100 gallon. I know many of you may say let him be by himself! (and that is a valid statement) But I would like to fill the tank a bit. So here it goes: What are the safest / best tank mates for Oscars? I care more about avoiding aggression problems and my oscar not getting hurt more than anything else. My tank is 5 ft x 2 ft x 1.5 ft. My Oscar is approx 6 in. Excited to hear your responses!

Hey Crazy Mike! Thanks for the suggestion, I have ran into severums as an option a lot. Wouldn't consider another Oscar though because I heard its 50/50 on aggression between oscars, especially if they haven't been raised together

6 silver dollars, let the O be the king

A severum I think would be a good tank mate. I have seen some pretty mean severums though. Firemouths are a good option too. Or, as you mentioned, let him have the tank.

Definitely want the O to be king, was thinking of severums as they are constantly described as passive. But is this common? Im terrified to buy an aggressive one.

Your best bet is go the silver Dollar route, 6 of them will be cool and they will leave your O alone. any other type of cichlid could pick on your O unless its much smaller than he is......then he could just eat it if it bothers him.

Think severums could beat him up?

I put my oscar into my established tank when he was 3" long that included a 6" rts, a 5" featherfin cat and a foot or more long pleco.

A few months later he is 5-6" and living only with the pleco and the catfish. I moved the shark to another tank as you could tell he bricked it anytime he was close to the oscar although I never saw any attacks. Then one morning the shark had taken a beating, cut in a few places. I suspected the catfish until I saw this attack so I moved him out and he has recovered completely now and back to his old self.

Oscars are bad-ass. Anything that scares my rts is bad-ass. Featherfin and pleco seem to work fine and they are not bothered by him in the slightest.
