I bought a new 75 gallon tank which came with a 10" oscar and now that i have cleaned and recycled the tank, would i be able to get any tank mates for it. Maybe another smaller cichlid, a school of silver dollars, or a pictus cat?

k, also how do you help an oscar get used to you. when ever i come to the tank it swims to the back corner of the tank as if it is hiding from me. Will this just take time?

It just takes a little time, once they associate you with food they'll come running every time you walk up to the glass. Most Oscars are also major drama queens, I had a 13" red Oscar in a 120 gl tank that got 2 water changes a week after years of twice weekly WC's you'd figure he would get used to them. Every time the Python came out he would go lay on his side on the bottom of the tank for 6-8 hrs and pout.

In my mind it depends on size and the filtration, if you have a ridiculous amount of filtration you may be able to add a couple tank mates, for a time. I have a single large flowerhorn in a 65 gallon and he is quickly outgrowing it. I can also vouch that Oscars are drama queens, mine will flip out and lay on his side "dead" every time i stick my arm in there for anything... ridiculous.

Jeff, has this oscar always been by himself? If so, trying to add something at this point may or may not work out. I keep an oscar and a severum in my 75g, but they were added together when they were not much bigger than a US quarter. The severum is the bossier fish by far. It's worked for me for ~3yrs so far, but is a combo that may not work for everyone. I can keep nitrates <20ppm between WWCs,but space is limited for these 2 fish in a 48"x18" footprint.

I get no drama or pouting out of my oscar, because each fish is more concerned about what the other is doing and that the other one isn't getting all the food, etc. I could drop any fish worthy food in the tank and they'll blow through it just so the other one can't get it.

With lots of wc like 70% a week maybe something like a green terror would work
