Okay so I'm currently growing out a one eyed albino oscar. He is perfect fine eats a tonne and is very happy and healthy. I feed him shrimp pellets, small mealworms, bloodworms and regular hikari gold pellets he is currently in a 20L tank with a 30 gallon filter. I know these guys grow really quickly, and I only moved him in there because he got beaten up in my big tank.

so my question is, I want to reintroduce him to my 225 gallon tank, all my fish in there are currently around 4", the little oscar is around 2" right now and very fat. My question is will he grow large enough in his tank to be able to go into my 225 without trouble, or will I have to upgrade him?

also what is the smallest size I could keep him in until he hits around 6" or so?

I want to reintroduce him but I don't want to go get a big expensive tank just for this. I care about the fishes health so I do completely understand that theres a high possibility he will be upgraded. Just trying to be a responsible fishkeeper.

any suggestions?

You can keep it by itself in a 55 until it reaches 8-10 inches. Oscars like alot of room and good water conditions. Water changes are the best thing for quick growth. It should grow an inch a month 20 liters will not work for long.

Its 20 gallons, and I only want to grow the fish to around 6" because I know he will grow a lot faster than my other stock

For the time it would take to get him to a suitable size im not so sure its worth it. I personally would keep an eye out for a cheap second hand tank in the region of 30-50, that way you neednt worry about him. But also it is large enough so that if your fish every become ill or injured you can treat them. Because once he exceeds the 6" mark you dont really want to put him in a 20. Just my 2 cents.

I wouldn't keep any fish over 4" in a 20 gal.

Yeah I don't really want him to be in the 20 at 6" its just, I do have some smaller cichlids in my large tank, but the I want him to be bigger than the fish that beat him up, so that when he goes in he won't be seen as a target again. If I have to upgrade him then I will I was just looking to see what you guys on here would do so I can see my options. I Plan on getting at least a grow out 55 by next year. I might have to get the tank earlier than I planned but it still works.

I'm just glad that this fish made a full recovery.

In a 20 long with no decor, you could keep him until 6 inches. At 6 inches, they don't have near the mass of 8-9 inch oscars. I wouldn't go over 6 inches, but if you want to keep him in there until then and then move him to the big tank, that would be fine.

3" in a 20 is all id do. oscars grow fast and with a large 225 should catch up and pass most.other juvie fish in no time. id put him back in the big tank and get him out of the 20. oscars arent super aggro and all they usually want to eat so i dont see you having problems in a 225 unless super overstocked

I think if you do 2 or 3 big water change a week,he should get to 5-6 inches,in the 20L. In the main tank he may be shy to eat because of the bunch
