A buddy of mine has two oscars, 5" and 7", and he wants to get them a bigger tank... and he needs it... with all the cleaning and what not he has to do now... which he should do more often if you ask me... he wants to get a tank but he doesnt know what size he should get... some places say you could do it with a 75g others say you need at least 125g for two oscars... he didnt do to much research and he is always asking me questions... i dont know what to tell him really... just to tell you how little this guy knew, he was using a 30g rated HOB filter to clean a 55g tank with those oscars in it... i know everyone says bigger is better, but what is the min. tank size he could get for them? and what filter type would you use for it?

First off i know minimum is what people want but sometimes it's better to just go ahead and get above minimum, OSCARS are one of these times. a 125g would be the best in my opinion, you could try a 90g or 100g, but a 75g is out. if you did 125g you could add a few more fish to the mix, maybe a school of silvr dollars or even another Oscar, but i would say something between a 100g-125g for the fish and your friends cleaning sake. Just my 2 cents.

alright cool ill tell him to go with 100-125g.... now what about filtration? LFS will drill the tank for him? should he go for an overflow with a wet/dry?

thanks for the quick reply OscarHook

Id agree with the 125g one oscar will claim a 75g as his own and be ral unfriendly to anything in his territory.a 125 and you can have the 2 oscars and a few other fish

He could do that.

Might be easier to just buy a couple canister filters and a hang on back filter.

I would say 100-125 is best.
But he could do 75. He wouldnt want any more fish than the 2 Oscars, but i believe 75 is sufficient for 2 O's.

Two adult oscars would be a big bio-load on a 75gal. At 5 and 7 inches, they still have plenty of growing left to do. Oscars are nasty fish. By that I mean they make a huge mess. And yeah, they most likely would brawl over space. Only a matter of time. I've seen them spaz out and try to jump out of smaller tanks to get away from a tankmate. I'd say a 125 with a wet-dry would be best. Or at least 1 HOB and a big canister.
