Was just wondering what are the most suitable cichlids to go with oscars? I've been trying to search the net but all most sites say is that they MAY get on with most South American cichlids. I'd like to get just a single cichlid to go with my O, was looking at JD's, but for some reason they can't be found anywhere. I also read somewhere that some Africans are suitable? red forest jewels, rusty cichlids etc?

I'm upgrading as my O grows, so cant say for sure what the end tank'll be, but somewhere between 125-180g.

I'd rather not get a school of dithers, none of them really appeal to me. But my LFS has a single giant danio that someone returned (they no longer stock them) and I thought I could get a red tail shark, the giant danio and some sort of catfish (Pictus, pleco etc) then the two cichlids.

Anyone have suggestions? I really like the Texas cichlids, but I never managed to find a definite answer on whether or not they were compatible, they seem to be a bit too aggressive.

Thanks
Emma

about the texas are you on about a true texas which maxs about 10inch or the green or blue texas which are more common and grow about 14inch i think they will be ok with the o but the tex will be the boss, other tank mates:firemouths,jd,gt,con the is alot out ther for tank mates gl

Tank mates are hit and miss as long as you dont go over board. As with all additions they should be watched carefully. I like to add fish when I know that I will be off work so that I can sit from afar and watch them. This way the tank mates can be observed and i can step in and seperate them if I need to. Sometimes the first introduction doesnt work. You can move them then try again days later. Hope this works.

i think the best tankmates for oscars are geophagus jupari. they clean up nicely and are god looking :)

I agree, jurupari make awesome oscar tankmates. Mellow enough so you don't have to worry about fights but can still hold their own if needed. They also keep the food off the bottom of the tank, a big issue with messy fish like oscars.
