The glorious US of A
i have a small oscar (about 1 1/2) and he was recently put in my 55 gal. he is all alone so i dont know how he got it. But all the fish stores are closed in my area because of the holiday so i cant get medicine. What can i do at home to stop it from getting worse?

and when i can get medicine what have you had the most success with?

If you can't get any meds do a 50% water change and use Aquarium salt 1 Tbs per 5 gallons of water a hospital will help and cut down on the amount of salt and meds required. If you don't have any Aquarium salt use Iodine or mercurachrome you can use a Q-tip to swab the fins. If you don't have that use Preoxide and swab the fins.

Fin rot is a bacterial infection you need an antibiotic, use Maracyn or Maracyn 2. Maracyn is for gram positive bacterial infections, Maracyn 2 is for gram negative bacterial infections. The best bet is go to the LFS and get a broad sprectrum antibiotic that will attack both. Follow the directions to make sure you use it correctly.

thank you i just tried to swap his fins with peroxide and it bubbled a little how it does if you put it in a cut and i rinsed it off hopefully it will help until i can get some of the meds listed......does anyone know if this is contagious to my other fish in the tank?

Yes is could be that's why you'll need the meds but the peroxide will help him till you can get to the store. Do the water changes to remove pathogens from the water and slow the progression. Clean water is the key to healthy fish. Water changes weekly will keep your fish healthy and growing.
