When I move my gar to a bigger tank he will be the only one would oscars be good with him if not what would be good tank mates for him

I just recently had to separate my pair of 10" oscars and my 10" florida gar... They had been together and it seemed to work for some time, but eventually the oscars starting harassing the gar almost constantly. No injuries sustained but it was clearly stressing the gar. I moved him out of that 180 gal and into a new tank by himself, his behavior is noticeably improved (more "gar"-like).

Gars do best with other gars, and it seems like most people have pretty good success keeping them with catfish (as long as size is comparable). No cichlids, no plecos is the general rule of thumb.

i keep my gar with spiney eels. bichir work well, and the only plecos that work well are panques... ime royals do fine as long as their needs are taken care of. cichlids always where fine until they matured... then it went south, overnight. no silver or "energetic" fish, and nothing small enough to fit in their mouth, or aggressive/territorial.

gars and any cichlids are generally not recommended. gars and aggressive cichlids are never recommended. that's the short of it.

check out the pinned topic in this forum on gar tankmates as that has at least somewhat useful information - especially in comparison to a thread that will inevitably repeat the same information in response to the same questions. good luck--
