hey all after trying a few different oscars in my aggressive community tank and having to return them a day or two later i think i have some that will work!! i wont lie my midas beat the hell out of em on day one but now a week later he has completely layed off and the are looking happy and not pinned in a top corner like previous attempts... they are a little beat up but heres some pics, 9-10 inch red and 10.5 inch albino red which im really liking the look off!-) oscars have great personalitys, its easy to forget how good they are once you spur off into rare and exotic cichlids...

When building a community of aggressive cichlids remember oscars are on the bottom of the totem pole. IMO other fish should be added to an oscar established tank, not the other way around. Also it is a good idea to make sure the oscar is at least a couple inches larger than the aggressive cichlid being added. (Midas, festae, jd, etc). This will give better chances of a community working but is not always a sure thing.

I have a tank with oscar, festae, jd, midas, all adults and so far everyone has been well for 6 months

thanks for the comments people. very odd these two, they've been in there a week and all they will eat is frozen prawn? the previous owner said he was feeding tetra pellets as a staple and i feed hikari bio gold. he was feeding prawns as well as blood worm, earth worm and chopped mussel... they arnt interested in mussel either? im sure they will settle and become the usual greedy o's in time...

I'm sure they will mate just five them a little time to get established , I was toying with the idea of a big Oscar myself last week 10"er going free at lfs but I decided to put my Texas out of my growout tank in the main instead , hes been in three days now still hiding away in plants but no damage done to him my female JD keeps chasing him off :)

hopefully, i would suggest it evz, you forget how personable the oscars are, i hand fed the red one today!-) wont be long till i have them diving a foot out the water for prawns lol... texas are know for a bit of a dive out the water too, never grown one out myself but i had a 5 inch female hybrid texas that would jump.
