Hi Everyone,

I am looking to get about 6 Oscars together in a 450 gallon aquarium, but I just read that they will become highly aggressive when a mating pair is formed.
However, I am not interested in breeding.
Would coexistence work if I just get all males or all females?

Thanks,
-Harry

Either would be better but there will be a pecking order among the group of Oscar's.

Since you can't tell them apart, it will be awhile before you can get an all male/female group, through venting or through breeding with the sex organs out. Females will pair up and both lay eggs. It's been seen before

Rocksor,

A female will mistakenly pair with another female? both laying eggs?
Are you saying I will still get breeding territoriality in a single-sex environment?

My goal is to have 6 oscars in 1 aquarium. Can it be done?

Yes, females laying eggs will cause issues for the other oscars. And yes, 2 females can trigger one another to lay eggs if they are egg bound.

Having 6 oscars can be done, but it's a lot of water changes unless you have a continous drip system. It's also going to be difficult to grow up just 6 oscars, and hope that all 6 are males. You could possible go around and look for confirmed breeding males (10-12"). This could take years to do since sexual maturity is around 2-3 years of age. This is also assuming you do not get a super aggressive male in the mix and it starts taking down the other 5 one by one. To be honest, it would easier to get a breeding pair for a 450 than all males.
