:nilly: Hello

I was planning on putting 4 oscars in a 220 gallon I have had them in a 80 gallon while I set the big tank up they are in with a black knife some other fish as they are all small 4-5 inches.

Been interesting watching the ones that hang together

My question is what are your opinions about putting a green terror and black knife in with the 4 oscars- they get along now

thanks

its been said many times that oscars should be kept either as a solo oscar, or in groups of 5 or 6+. im pretty sure this is highly debatable however. IMO in a 220 they should have enough room to not be in each other faces. just make sure to add some driftwood or plain clay pots as hiding spots and to break lines of sight.

the knife will get along fine if he has a good hiding spot, as long as the GT or the oscars arent overly aggressive.

Thanks

Follow on question from ikeepPacu response Decorations to break up lines of sight?

I have raised groups of Oscars a few times in up to a 300 gal tank... I've never had success keeping a group of Oscars long term... including groups of 6+... I am convinced they simply do not appreciate same species association (expect a mate) as adults...

But as far as a Green Terror and/or Black Ghost knife as tankames for an Oscar or Oscars... I have kept both with Oscars and they did absolutely fine. Male GT's can be fairly aggressive but Oscars get pretty darn big... the two qualities seem to balance each other out well...

I have raised two BGKs with Cichlids in recent years. I still have one of them which is a bit over 12" long. The BGK does it's own thing and the Cichlids do not interact with it unless they are defending fry from the it. You would be / will be amazed at how aggressive a BGK can be when it's feasting on Cichlid fry...

I've never kept more than two Oscars at a time but they should be fine in a 220 with the GT and BK.

I have kept multile oscars together but not untill they have reached max size or sexual maturity. My only concern would be the knife getting bullied or killed as they are delicate when young. They are also more specialised dietary. Most only take bloodworm and chopped meaty feed. Although they could probably be gotten onto dry feed over time.
