Oscar's growth

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
From my readings about oscars and experience with other cichlids, theyn should grow about 1/2 inch to 1 inch per month, and I wouldn't really recommend keeping one past about 8" in a 55, especially since they are so messy and also prone to HITH, which can be caused by bad water quality. I'd say you've got about 6 months, but that's just my 2 cents, so everyone can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I've seen people keep foot-long O's in a 55 before for years, but they never got much bigger than that, so maybe slightly stunted?

depends...
my 55 is 13" wide, how wide's yours?

if its 12" like most 55's id say until you feel that tank size even comes across the oscar's mind mine has grown about an inch per month

yea i saw an O today that was just amazing in color and always wanted one, but i have my 55g up and running again with my new marineland 400 filter finishing up its cycleing, dont really know what to get. Had a JD that was so skittish it really got me out of fishkeeping so i gave to a friend and he lives in his 220g

yea i think mine is the 12'' width like most

my dad also saw the oscar and like him he wanted me to get 2 or 3 for my tank, then i had to spend the next 5 mins in the pet store trying to explain why that would not work lol, somethines parents just dont understand :screwy:

and the only reason why i know is because of you guys from MFK that help so much :headbang2

i got mine a month ago he was 2in now hes 5in
so i guess not that long

in my experience it really depends on what you feed them as well...real meaty foods like earthworms, beefheart, massivore etc really bulk them up fast. my 2 91/2 inch O's have eaten stuff like that since they were 3 inches..that was about 6 months ago..i wouldnt recommend putting them in that tank if its a 55 reg since they are only 12 inches wide..if you plan on upgrading to at least a 75 which is 18 inches wide they should be ok for a few months at least...good luck if you get them they are great fish with tons of personality but also ravenous eaters

yea thats why i thought oscars were always cool, they have great personalities, fun to watch and great to watch during feeding time. I want to upgrade to a bigger tank, and i have to money for a bigger tank, but my parents dont want me to get another one. My 55g is in my bedroom and i was thinking like a 125 or 150g for in the basement, but my dad just tells me when i have my own house i can do what i want. so im kinda stuck as the 55g the largest tank atm....bums me out

Fish grow as fast as you feed them and with the water changes. If you don't power feed him it'll be good to go in the 55 for possibly a year or so. It's only one fish, so as long as it can turn freely around while swimming it'll be fine. If you notice he's growing too fast cut back on the feedings. They don't have to eat everyday. The weekly water changes will keep the water quality good and less feeding means less waste and slower growing. Pump him up if you feel it's not growing fast enough.
