How long can this stock list live comforable in a 30 Gallon Tall tank;
1 Tiger Oscar, 1 Albino TO, and 1 Black Convict.

Gave my niece a 30g tank this weekend and she did not listen to me and added these to this tank. When am I gonna have to set up a new tank for them?

Thanks,

Bear

Not long, probably 5 months at most. There are going to be aggression problems. You should get a 55+ gallon, and larger would really be better. The convict can probably live there alone, though.

How long can they live in a 30 gallon tank comfortable? I would say never. Thats 10 gallons for each of them. I would tell your nice to take the oscars back to the pet store and just keep the convict. If she permanently wants to keep all three of those fish, Id say a 125 gallon would be a good size. If the fish are still small( around 2'') Id say 3 months max before a upgrade to a 75 is needed.

That's what I thought. Kids!!.....

I have 2 options,

Could get an 85g from a LFS here, (under 100)
talk her into putting them in my 240 (Would they coexist with the follow stock?
2 Green Terror
2 Jack Dempsey
3 Blood Parrot
2 Severums
All about half full size and about 2 years old.

Opinions please...............

Bear

PS dont think taking them back will be an option..Need to figure out how to keep

If you just set the tank up this weekend and she already added those three fish you might not have anything to worry about. Two oscars and a convict in an uncycled 30 gallon tank isn't going to turn out well. :(

When I was a stupid newb teenager I had an oscar, a jack dempsey and a pacu together for about 6 months in a 20 gallon high tank. Now I know now that was stupid but they all reached about 5" before I got rid of them and there were not any issues. I think you have a few months if the fish are small yet. I think in the 85 gallon she would have a lot more time, but yeah, a 125 is ideal for oscars to reach their potential.

That shouldn't be a problem, the tank had established gravel and plants. As well as I was able to put in 15 gallons of the tank water. There is also a pleco in the tank that came with it.

No need to lecture :nilly: I know. I should have gone with her to buy the fish, and the pleco (10-12") that came with the tank has been in it for 11 years. The tank is VERY over filtered so bio should not be a problem. Plus the tank has 12x turnover.

Well will keep the fingers crossed, and hope I will be setting up a oscar tank soon.

Any thoughts about putting them with my SA cichlids?

yeah they would probably do fine in your big tank, what i would suggest is get the 85g, and put one of the oscars in your tank and let her keep one of the Os and the con and get some giant danios or something, if they are still really small then would prolly be ok in that tank for 2-3mnths, but if that pleco is in there then it is already overstocked because plecos make a TON of waste GOOD LUCK, and we all have to start somewhere, just let this be a learning experience for your niece to learn to research before she buys

5 months would be horrible. I say at most 2 months. The bioload is going to be MASSIVE in a 30g with two Oscars and a con. 55g doesn't even cut it for a single oscar much less two as well as a con. So i say at least 150gallons with superb filtration. You could use the 30 gallon as a sump.
