Woke up this morning and was very surprised to see that my tiger oscar is pretty scuffed up. He and his tankmate (albino tiger) have been living together in a 180 for a long time now and up to this point I was thrilled with how well they got along (I thought they had formed a pair as there has been nothing but tail fluttering and swimming together).

They are both around 10", only other tankmates are a few non aggressive turtles (which the oscars basically use as toys, pushing them around the tank occasionally). I've been watching them for about 40 minutes, they have spent about half of that time lip locking, with the albino taking some scales of the side of the tiger (both of his sides are scraped up). Right now they aren't scrapping at all, just hanging out. This is all new since last night when I went to bed.

So I can house one of them in a 55 gallon temporarily, but how can I figure out if this is a mating thing or if this is 2 males that will need to be permanently separated?

really good question,I have something very similar going on in my tank too so interested to hear, my os havent ripped scales off yet but they went from being buddies to lip locking and scrapping a bit more than usual

as a temp solution a 55 could work but nothing long term... dont be that guy,

Nobody with an idea on how to approach it? I have them separated for the time being....

I'm not experienced with oscars spawning, but have read on it. A 180 is plenty of space for a pairs' pre-spawn games. have they started any digging gravel in one spot? If not, and no sign of tubes appearing... sounds like plain fighting.
