im sure this has been asked a billion times, a search pulled up a few answers for me.

i have 2 oscars, not that old. one is 6-6.5 in (tiger i do belive) the other is about 5 in (red oscar) i have had them maybe 3 months.

every week when i do my water change (50%) they become very active in mating behavior, or so i think. they do the lip locking, some what aggressive some times and almost looks like there fighting. the red oscar actually hid in the corner for a while last water change, it was getting kinda intense. but then they go and do there little circle around each other and do there little shake/flitter thing. sometimes one of them will go down to the bottom and pick at the rocks.

they have not moved rocks around on the bottom and made a next so to say.

i guess my questions are, what do you guys think is going on. would a male and a male or female and female do this together? or am i looking at a male and female pair?? how long could this go on before baby oscars, what can i expect of the baby oscars, will the parents eat them??

im gonna try and get some video, gotta find the camera and then wait on them to do it again.

What size is the tank? Do you actually have something in your tank that they can use for a spawning site if they are indeed attempting to mate? I think Oscars will need a flat surface like a piece of slate. I have never kept Oscars so this is all based on threads I have read on this site.

o yea 75gal. there is a couple little flat rocks and i have also heard that they will move the rocks and use the glass on the bottom as a flat spot if need be but im not sure. thats why i ask.

Oscars will lay eggs on any rock on the bottom. My experience has been: They will make a very large pit in the substrate. Then the female will clean the site, itll look like shes fighting the rock. If you see that, then you have a pair. They are very good parents and will NOT eat the fry. They will in fact defend them very aggressivly and WILL kill anything else in the tank.

that sounds pretty cool. no moving of the gravel at this time, just the so called matting dance i guess you would call it.

They may be too young. I believe they are mature at 6" but could be wrong. Mine didnt spawn til about 10" or so.

yea i figured they were way to young to mate. just kinda wonderin if it might be forshowding of future events.
