I just noticed oscars vibrate their tails in front of their own species. Does anyone know why they do this? To stake out territory? Also, would a single oscar in a tank be lonely?

Shaking there tail is like sending message youre in my territory like a cat hissing get away .Most people keep oscar alone or if there will be a tank mate its best if its different species .I recently added new oscar with my old one and it was okay for a while now there kind od figthing .Its tuff with oscar somtimes they like company somtimes they will turn on there tank mate even if they were getting along .Youre going to need a 100 gallon or more for two oscar also you can try it just dont be suprised if in two or three months you have to remove one .

I love the tail rattle....it's a territorial warning....My o's do it all the time! :grinyes:

my o is in a tank alone and shakes his tail at me, then comes back and begs for food

They will also do a full body kinda shake thing when they're interested in some nookie. The whole back half of their body, it's a natural cichlid reaction. My mated Mbuna's and Cons do the same thing. Just watch to see if they're fighting or just doin' a little grabass.

a lot of my cichlids do that when they feel threatened by a tankmate. They also turn pale in color

I just got a new pleco in my tank and my oscar has been doing that to him all day long...i never knew what it was...but it is funny that even fish can be so territorial

You haven't seen nothing until you've seen a Buttikoferi SO PISSED OFF that it quivers its lip very rapidly. It's hilarious. He skips the tail shaking though, and goes straight for the removing of the other fishes face.

I have my Oscar with a LMB, bullhead, and Common Pleco. They are all very active and I guess happy.
