Why is it that fish that will terrorize every fish in the tank seem to always leave plecos alone? Is it that they are so low key they are not seen as a threat?

not sure.....i guess so..seems like most fish leave pleco alone except other plecos i had a 3" royal in with a 11" tsn for two months..weird

Plecos are "protected" by several features:

- They're nocturnal, and most our agressive fishes are diurnal, what makes them naturally avoid the agression;
- They have an armour of bony plates, not scales. their vulnerable parts are their bellys and eyes;
- Several species bear spines, some are EXTREMELY spiny. This, and the pectoral and dorsal fin "spikes" (enlarged first rays) make it difficult to swallow a pleco;
- They heal fast, recovering from bites and scratchs easily;
- Most species are cryptic, camouflated, or keep hiding under the tank furniture, making it difficult to find them and/or get them;
- Plecos are VERY fast swimmers, especially when fleeing away from a menace. They seek for shelter, and usually become out of reach quickly.

Best regards.

not all plecos are armored, and I have had some very nice plecos go down to things that will leave everything alone, and also some that won't leave anything alone. One of my L200 Green Phantoms got killed by a couple of angels, and my blue panaque got eaten by my Marble cat.

Actually, all plecos are armored with bony plates. Most don't have spines, but ALL have bony plates. Some cichlids can kil a pleco, mainly because of stress. They blow charges at their only vulnerable part easily hitten... THEIR EYES. If a tankmate is big enough to fit a pleco in its mouth, it MAY eat it. This is especially true for big catfishes. I lost a very spiny sultan plec (Leporacanthicus joselimae) to my RTCxTSN cat some days ago. The big-mouthed cat just ATE it and all its spines too. ;)

Best regards.

Daniel.
