other options for fbf sand?

are there any? has anyone had any success in running anything but the insanely expensive fbf media in a fbf?
 
ok stick with me here... i have herd that the little sand that you get from crushing lavarocks and useing the poweder in the FBF's... super effective. but i have only read one artical useing it.
 
Any irregular sand particle will do. Some sand is heavier than others and some sand buffer more than others which may or may not be a concern. Some people add a couple of larger pebbles to help break up any clumping. Make sure its irregular particles as smooth round sand will get abraided evenly destroying the bacteria.

only thing that sucks on that is the shipping is $25. are there any box chains that would carry it?
 
imo i dont think that anyone esle carries this cause not a lot of people need 50lbs lol that enough for like over 1000gallons!
btw how much sand do you need?
 
The main thing with any FBF sand is that it needs to be within certian weight specifications. If not then the lighter particles wash out into the tank and the heavier particles don't suspend in the water collum like they should and its difficult to establish a proper ballance. It's not really something you have to replace so the initial cost of the media isn't much of a concideration IMO. You could probubly set the FBF up on a rubbermade tub and run it for a while with differant...well cleaned sands and let the smaller crushed particles wash out into the tub before set it up. That why you can add media as necessary to top it off and have the unit ready to transfur onto your tank after a week or so. Personaly I'd just buy the stuff made for FBF....all of this has already been done and the company has already found the best mix to use in FBF's
 
acording to all the sites i'm seeing i need 9 lb. it's a fb900 but i won't have it till friday. i'm just doing a lil research. just like i'm having trouble trying to find out what configurations you can set an m2 by pentair up in.
 
they usually come with the sand.... if not its really a one time purchase just buy the stuff meant for it....
