Would they be okay in a 5.5 gallon tank with live plants. Fully cycled and matured (running since like... april?) and the plants keep the nitrates at 0? Would a trio or so be okay in there. Having some spot algae on some of my plants in there and they're gentle with plants.

Okay cuz I have issues with Algae right now. I switched to a higher light or my micro swords and got an algae bloom. The Betta was curious at first but he doesn't seem to care now that they've been in there a few minutes.
It may be fine, but you never really know until you actually try it out. Hopefully everything works out for the best 
Oh I'm supplementing them with fresh veggies even when they are eating the algae off the side. SInce that algae doesn't have much in the way of nutrition for them.
