Hi all,

Over the next 4 – 6 months we will try our hand at building our monster tank in a retail environment.

Specific details are a little sketchy at the moment but we envisage that the external walls will be approximately 3mt long * 2.2mts wide * up to 2.5mts high (though we don't have to fill it to the top as ideally we don't want to use lids and don't want the fish jumping) … early estimates being between 11-12k litres, though this is likely to vary.

Immediate obstacles / issues that we will need to overcome are as follow:

1. Whether to construct from concrete blocks or concrete.

2. How to manage to huge viewing glass that we would like at the front and various smaller viewing glasses on 2 other sides.

3. How to adequately manage the air exchange to control humidity, especially if we go with no lid.

4. Filtration. Although we have an understanding of what will be required, because space is limited we need to think about where to hide it. A gravity fed unit with a bottom drain would be ideal though very difficult to pull off because of waters levels and huge sump size, unless we go with a sealed unit.

5. Lighting. There will be plenty of natural light during the day but additional lighting will be required for night.

We have started playing with google sketchup and hope to post some draft drawings soon.

This thread will most likely start off slowly but hopefully will pick up momentum as we move past the design stage and start production.

Would love to hear any thoughts you may have along the way.

Nice. I think humidity will be your biggest problem. And for us yankees, what does mt and mts mean? Is it meters?

Yes, meters. Lucky we weren't talking mm's aka millimeters :)

Yes, project will be tricky because it will be the main show focus of the shop and really needs to be perfect if we are to pull it off ... any sign of humidity or smells just wont do.

if you've never built your own tank from the ground up I suggest you hire someone for this. There are too many variables that can go wrong, especially when you talk that volume of water....I'm sure your local aquarium or zoo could recommend someone to engineer the design for you.

Had a go sketching it up.

Initially thought of building it from besser blocks, lots of rio and core filling the blocks but now thinking steel work may be the best option.

Interested to know what you guys think of the design and "doability"?

Good luck with your build.

Anything is doable. Go for it!

i think steel would definately be the way to go, i say this because you can weld all the seams shut, which is easy. also the strength factor, for example a 1" long x 1/4" weld can support a mind blowing 2 tons, so just imagine a weld running along the seams of your tank and what it can support. nothing compares to steel when it comes to being strong.

Steel is incredibly strong the only problem I had when I was looking at building a steel tank was the cost of the steel and the cost of the coating. Plus as it was pointed out to me the weight of the thing.

The question is do you plan on moving it. If so go with steel or wood. If not I would build it out of block.
