We've had this Flowerhorn for a few months. Got it at almost 2 inches. Coloring up really well. Any opinions on what type it is?IMG_20210204_065950516.jpg
This is our newer Flowerhorn, bought from the same LFS but when we turn the lights off he goes dark, any ideas why he does this? He shares the tank with the older female pictured above divided by light diffuser. Also two plecos in the tank.

If he turns dark only when lights are out (or hiding) it’s likely a defense mechanism. He is darkening to blend with a darker environment so it cannot be seen by potential predators.

The first one looks like a Magma FH, ZZ Red Dragon x Kamfa cross. The second one looks to be a regular ZZ Red Dragon. As for the color changes, well Deadeye pretty well explained that. Cichlids are honestly faster at changing color then a chameleon is. Yours I imagine is probably stressed because of the move to a new home and probably why it keeps changing colors is that, like Deadeye mentioned, it's trying to camouflage itself so it can hide. Honestly I would recommend adding in a fake cave or something that it can choose to hide in if it so feels the need to. I find that most fish, even skittish ones, will tend not to hide if there is an abundance of hiding places.
