Outdoor Jack Dempsey spawn

All plants. I need to show video of the other ones that are completely covered. The hornwort and anacharis and the roots of the floaters trap all kinds of sediment which grows massive colonies of paramecium and industrial and other pond life as well as holding all kinds of bug larva. So like a sponge filter but better. The vats all bloom green in mid- late April when the pollen starts and the plants are still going slow due to chilly evenings. It then the pots take over and they just clear up. I keep waiting that one day the fish will die overnight due to CO2 but it hasn’t happened. My depth is also shallow enough at 2’ that the bottom stays pretty well oxygenated.
I have 6 varieties of floater and 6 varieties of plants so something is always doing well and taking care of business. This is that vat you can see the hollow log decoration where the fry were hatched and to the right of it you can actually see the mother’s head if you knew it was there / that that is what you are seeing 359DF706-F961-4DAB-85A1-0329FA4A2A98.jpeg

If I were to try something like that do you think I would have to wait for the plants to really establish or just throw them in and hope for the best

The plants won’t take off without fish. It’s a whole system so to speak. If you throw a couple pairs of fish or a pair depending how mean they are.. out in a 180 like that and throw in a couple bunch’s of plants it’ll go on its own. So I guess option B throw in plamts and fish and hope for the best. For what it’s worth plants and fish were both designed for life outside. Throw some fish out throw in some plants and feed lighter than you do on your aquariums. There will eventually be food galore I still feed most days to Limit predation among fry etc. Your live plants will come with nitrifying bacteria onboard which will speed rhe cycle. I’d say pick a pretty shady spot for best results

I might throw one of my Honduran red point pairs out there. Any recommendations as to where to get one of those vats

The ones I use are tuff stuff which have a larger footprint than equivalent rubber made

I can get the 110 gallon for 85 bucks out the door locally. I get bigger sizes an hour away at the feed store. The 140s are 130$ and the 180s were like 150-160
I’d google tuff stuff stock tank and see who comes up near you.

Do you put any substrate if so what kind

i do not. they build up a layer of leaf litter etc. detritus. I have put sand in a couple but it doesn’t help and it’s impossible to get it clean so it just becomes a constituent of the detritus.
I have Anacharis, hornwort, guppy grass, corkscrew Val, water sprite and water wisteria. I have water spangles water lettuce dwarf water lettuce frog bit red root floater and water hyacinth. They all just float. I have taken oyster shells and drilled holes so I can weight stems down but it doesn’t matter. I put stones in at the ends for a couple places in for breeding and let nature do it’s thing.
