I am thinking about doing a pond project for this year. What do you think of setting up a storage shed and puttng an above ground pond in it? The pond diameter would be either 8' or 12' depending on the size of the shed, 10' or 14'.

I would consider it an outdoor pond because it doesn't have the insulation, utility and accessbility of an indoor environment. The shed is to prevent falling leaves, wild animals, and debris from the pond, and heat loss. I want to do a grow out ATF shoal.

Well then I guess a shed would be fine or you could just net the pond or use one of the car shelter tents. With one of those you could take the sides down for fresh air and accessibility and put them up at night.

Good idea chesterfieldzoo , then he can go 8'x20' :D, but it's up for fresh air and down at night :D. Doesn't help with the wild animals tho.

Scorponok, it will work, you can put clear panels in the roof (Home Depot) for added light. Accessibility is a problem, along with filter placement (could be put above pond but still hard to access).

Aside from the goofy location you posted so I would have to ask... where are you located?

My location is nor cal. The concern I have the most is the same as everyone else, heat preservation for tropical fish. The tent will cover the debris in the pond and possible prevention from wildlife, but it does not address the heat loss. The clear panel suggestion is a great idea, that gets me thinking of a greenhouse instead, but without boiling the fish in the summer. I guess I can always put a tarp over the greenhouse.

Back to main concern, will a pond in a greenhouse/shed perserve heat loss in the winter that gets down to low 30s? I am thinking of wrapping insulation material around the pond such as fiberglass and cover the top to prevent evaporation.

I would imagine that you'll also have to make allowences for cooling in the summer. Our shed used to get near 120 degrees inside on hot days.

The more I am looking into the greenhouse, the more sense it makes. It comes with options of opening roof panel for air, fan kit for ventilation, and propane heater for the greenhouse. They also sell cooling devices.

A friend has horse troughs in his greenhouse and has guppies, swordtails, mollies and something else.

Man, do the horses have to drink thru a straw?
