Okay my dad and I are thinking about setting up an outdoor pond that will run year round!!!!

I was thinking of buying a big baby pool and bigging a hole for it then placeing it in the hole!!!

I want to do native so how many gallons how deep so it doesnt freeze during the winter etc!!!
filter etc?

Thanks guys

actually forget the baby pool idea im going to dig a hole of all different depts and use a linner!!!

will a tarp work or do i have to use a special liner

You want the pond about 4feet deep, the deeper the better as it takes longer to heat up in the summer and will stay warmer in the winter.

You will be best off using a specialy made liner, tarp will probably rip.

You won't really need a heater if your going to stock the pond with natives, as long as it is deeper than 4 feet, but what you will need is a fountain or a waterfall so part of the surface remains open so all the gasses can diffuse properly.

Ok,

1000g

Atleast 18" below the frost line with enough room for all the fish to reside there for the winter.

Use a pond liner with several inches of sand under it. Tarps aren't UV protected, are thin and won't last.

Search around here for some great info / ideas.

Use a pond heater or trough de-icer and aeration to keep the ice open.

HUH?

no you dont need aeration all year.
ponds have a large enough surface area that they can allow gas trasfer easily.
Trough de-icers are sometimes expensive. But if you get lucky you can get one for cheap.
i got one at petsmart for $12.00

okay cool well i looked at those websites i am indeed going to make my own filter.

Is there anyneed to een have an airation device then?

If you have the return as a waterfall to splash and agitate the surface, that will do it for the summer (if it doesn't get to hot)(oxygen depervation).
