Today coming home from church i was talking to my mom joking around about cars houses and stuff. Then i said can we get a pond for the house? she said not inside but outside yes just talk to your dad im sure he would help you out. So i raced inside and looked in the backyard for places that we both could picture a pond being. We live in south florida so its basicly hott all year besides some days during the winter and stuff. But i remember that one website where that ranch wholesale thing would sell the big tubs (300 gal +) ect. I was wondering if it'd be better to buy somthing like that, or like dig and dig till reasonable size and like put somthing on the outside like cement and or pond liner or somthing? Does anyone have any ideas to what i could do or any step by step thing that somone has done so i could show my dad? And what would be the best material and stuff to use if we didnt buy lready made pond? thanks!

well it matters how big you want to make you pond if the already made ponds are big enough then go ahead with that. But if you are like me you may want to make it bigger. And it also depends how many fish you want to put in and what kind you want to put in.

But since you live in florida you dont need a certain depth. Because up here in the north east we needed atleast 3feet deep so the fish dont die!:banher:

well the fish i thought about were probly the local natives which are small mouth peacock bass blue gill maybe put minnows as well and a couple of cichlids. But mainly id like peacock bass, maybe some kind of gar? spotteds / florida if they could live with the temperature and such and a turtle who knows? i was looking around for pond liner when i found theres a kit on home depot if you search for beckett large complete water garden kit. I was wondering if i was to buy this ($170) id like to do a similar idea to this persons would this kit help me alaong? and is it worth it?

(i know that pump isnt enough for a 1000gal pond which is what hte kit says it could make so maybe buy another pump or somthing? or just a bigger one)

My mom is really into this and we already found spot in the backyard with enough shade and she called one of my aunts that recently had a pond she made with her husband before they moved and that motivated her a little more since she likes the fact tht she gets to get rid of a space in the backyard that isnt used.

bigg above ground swimming pool.
there are 10'X 30" and they are 50 bucks

20 x 18 and 4-5ft deep would be adequit for 3-4 peacocks 2 spotted gar, 15-20 sunnies a bunch of minnows and a channel cat,if ya wanted one.

id rec. a scavenging catfish though (like a channel) they really help clean up uneatin food and dead fish...just be careful you dont put in small fish that you really like, they'll get eatin too.

You really need it a little deeper so the fish don't cook on the hot days here. 2ft on one end and 3ft and a shelf around the edge to hold some plants or a couple of stands in the water.

Make sure that the leaves from the shade aren't poisonous to the fish.

Make your own W/D filter.

Now for the hard part...keeping critters out. Fruit tree netting works for some things. A floating snake or bird statue that you can move around.

How about a pic of the impending site.
