Hey guys

Currently installing inground 300-400 litre pond. Only small one.

Is there any tactics that you can apply to keep water warm or Insulated though the highs and lows of seasons. Without the use of a heater.

Ive wanted to stock it with Archer Fish or even a Saratoga. but they require at least 20-30 degrees. In Sydney, during Winter temperature could drop to 0-5 degrees and in Summer we reach 30 degrees and even 40 degrees.

If not, which Australian Natives could I use for this pond. Thinking of Tandanus Cats, Australian Bass or a Silver Perch. Would they work. Or could you guys suggest any Aussy Natives that I can use.

That's a small pond to regulate temps with that much of external variations.

Are you using a liner or hard shell?

Do you know what the frost line is in your area?

Bacteria in a filter die off lower than 12*C so you'll have to take that into consideration with the type of fish you keep.

Technically the pond should be at least 3ft deep, so that would give you a 2ft x 2ft x 3ft pond :grinno:.

Solar heating is a good possibility & shade w/evaporative cooling for the summer.

Thanks Dr Joe

oh wow

definitely in-experienced here...

pond is only 0.5 metres dip (total mesurement 1x1x0.5) but is connected with another pond sitting on top of the ground roughly 0.5 x 0.8 x 0.8m.

im using a pond liner.

darn.. might only be able to get away with goldfish? how boring (no offence to goldfish lovers out there).

Bacteria in a filter die off lower than 12*C <== oh right? so ill be fine in summer but when winter hits. Ill be in trouble

Solar heating <== this is a dumb question but what happens during night? doesnt it require sun to continually heat the water. or does solar heaters store enought sunlight to continue through the night? are you able to purchase this or are they going to be DIY's?
