enid, ok
im looking into building an outdoor pond in my back yard (probably be next year this time when i get the money and time). anyways, i have the spot and design idea laid out where it will go, gonna go with the above ground pond framed with landscape timbers like i have seen guys on here do (very nice looking ponds IMO).it will pe an L shape, actually 2 ponds but will look like one. the long L will have 3 ft high rail with water 6" below the top and small L will be 2'6" with water 6" below the top. water will flow from the taller into the smaller then recirculated of course. all said the rough estimate on gallons will be around 2,900 gallon area. what kind of filtration system do any of you use to circulate and clean one this size? or recommend? this will be my first outdoor pond ever so trying to do research and plan ahead. and what kind of fish? will be 2 seperate ponds so to say so can stock each different. am looking into koi as the obvious and most common in outdoor ponds. will have heaters in winter to keep ice off but not looking to keep it heated year round for tropical fish. sorry for such a long post, just trying to be thorough and lay out my idea.

I would go with a 4" bottom drain( you could probably get away with a 3", but id go with a 4"), run your drain line into a settling chamber( i would go with a 200 gallon, depending on the gph pump you choose), then lead that to your bio filter, have have a pump, pump the water back into the top pond via TPR's, and let gravity do the rest. if you want, check out koiphen.com , tons of info on filtration. good luck!

Is the L shape for sure? It will create a lot of corners that could be dead spots for flow and waste. Filtration and pump size should be determined by stock list and final gallonage.
