We have some building works going on in the garden and have decided to incorporate a pond with a window for keeping outdoor fish in.

I am looking for some advice with regards to lining it and the glass from anybody else who has experience with this type of build.

The pond is built in block work currently with pillars supporting the corners (see picture). It will be rendered on the outside and we have left a section out to put a window. This will be sitting on supports on the inside and have a significant overlap to silicone etc.

The interior size of the pond is 190cm x 348cm. The window opening is 260cm x 46cm. However we plan on using glass which is 290 cm x 60 cm to give the overlap inside.

What type of glass have people used in aquariums/ponds of this nature? I have looked online at charts and calculations and it seems that we need 12mm. The water will not be going to the top edge of the glass probably around 15cm below. I am nervous though! These are my concerns.

12mm normal glass is around 3.5 safety rating. I don't feel like this is a good buffer.
12mm toughened would be super strong however I worry about the shatter issue and if anything did ever happen then the whole window would blow, possibly taking fish out of the waterfall that would ensue!
12mm laminted is this as strong as 12mm glass?

I have looked at laminated toughened glass however this is much pricier and not sure if it is complete overkill?

With regards to lining we are thinking of using ka tanking slurry with their corner fillet. I have spoken with them and they assure me it is safe to use as a pond liner in direct contact with the water for aquatic life but I was just wondering if anybody else had experience of using tanking slurry products?

I have attached a picture of the build in it's current state so that you can get an idea of it! I hope this helps! Really looking forward to any advice from you guys and gals! :) I want my fishy friends to be safe!

Hi Curtis.

Thank you for that URL! I had seen pictures of that pond on google so its interesting to see some more pictures of it! I read that they used Perspex for those windows. It looks pretty chunky and sturdy. :)

Yea he's had that pond up and running since early 2011 I believe. It's a real beauty. I'm sure if he's still active you could pm him and ask a question or 2.

IMO, outdoor tanks of over 1500 gallons should have a safety factor of at least 7. The concrete block construction itself probably has a safety factor of at least 10. So I'd double the glass thickness.

Personally if I ever put a window on an outdoor aquarium I'd go with acrylic. Just that extra safety factor.

I once saw a video of 6" thick acrylic go bust on an outdoor tank. It doesn't do well in the sun.

How many decades old was it and how big and what region was it in? She's in the UK not much sun there. It should be fine. If you check out the thread I linked earlier he lives in the UK and used acrylic for his window and it's still ruining nearly 3 years later.

To be honest I think we are settled on glass over acrylic really. I think maybe its worth spending the extra money then and going for 12mm toughened laminated. This would get rid of the problem of the glass shattering out completely in case of any incident and the 12mm would be 4 times as strong as 12mm glass. Peace of mind for an extra £60 or so I think is probably worth it in the long run!

How did you calculate the safety factor for 12mm glass? Most of the calculators that I've encountered are based on calculations that take into consideration the glass being braced across the top, where with your set up it looks like it will just be the single sheet? I wouldn't go for laminated or toughened glass in this situation, personally. I think going over-likk would be worth while though. It is a big jump in cost from 12mm to 15mm, but probably worth while, maybe even 19mm.
