here is a pic of my 1/4 acre pond. its dried up a good bit from the drought tho but the water lilies i planted are doing great. there are channel catfish, largemouth bass, bluegill, shiners, and one 2 ft grass carp. i want to add some ornamental koi to give him some company.

So...... Do it! I love koi.

They're gonna have to be large to start with or the bass is gonna be fatter.

How old is the pond and how much land do you have there?

the pond is on 13 acres. it is spring-fed, u can feel the cold water coming up from the clay bottom. its been there along time. at first there were only shiners and bullfrogs. actually i had some larger pine trees on the back of the levee cut down bc they were shading the bald cypress and dawn redwoods that i planted on the perimeter and it started losing water. around 4' in the middle now bc its so low. how big would the koi have to be? the bass are 4 years old, ive caught some that are 3-4 pounds and their mouths were huge. also some of the channel cats are 8 pounds. i have a 100 gallon goldfish tank with 3 4" koi now. also i was worried about herons bc they do have some of different species including the great blue heron. which ive known some people to shoot at their ponds but i would never ever ever shoot any wild animal unless it was absolutely necessary. maybe i should only use the calico color koi so they have some type of camo? im really dreaming of having koi 2 feet long feeding like my carp, it would be like the ponds at some japanese resturants but i surely dont want to purchase a foot long koi for 45$

I have heard of places that sell them for like $1 an inch. I don't know where it is but I have heard of it.

i would love to just hook catch and release my whopper carp bc im pretty sure its close to 15 pounds. ill try to take a pic when i feed it but its just a dull copper color and the only thing that pokes out the water is his snout and lips.

Man, that makes for a sweet pond, by the way, Where are you ?

Unless you fence off a section of the pond for the koi, they're gonna have to be atleast the same size as the bass, remember bass are preditors.

Yea, herons are a problem. Got one yesterday. Scared him under a tree and soaked him with the hose, wasn't sure if he could fly he was so wet. :naughty: He was ok tho, I wouldn't hurt them. But I don't think he'll be back. He never did get any fish.

Check out pricing on this site, http://www.grandaquatic.com/koi-fish.asp I haven't used them yet and don't know what shipping is but they are representitive of most over there. For $100. you could have some nice fish.

Sure you have Chad55, Whats that noise, could it be your alarm going off telling you to take your meds ? :screwy:

( Wish they'd make those in a patch so I wouldn't forget  )

im in southwestern mississippi, yes i know how voracious florida bass can be so i wouldnt add any koi less than 6 inches and that might be pushing it. the grass carp was only about 3 or 4 inches when he was put in but at that time the only other fish were millions of shiners.
