Has anyone successfully kept rays in an outdoor pond in a place that has a winter with snow (In maybe a greenhouse-type setup, or something similar)? I was just wondering, because this caught my eye and I might put it on one of my long-term goal / to-do lists.

That would work... if you built a building around it... and heated it...

I'm sure people who grow tropical plants have cheap ways to build heat-trapping greenhouses; if that were used in conjunction with a couple of heaters in the water, it might just work.

Hopefully someone out there with some experience, if even just second hand, might be able to shed some more light onto this. I am not looking for anything fancy; just something that I could build in my backyard (when I get one) that would provide suitable overwintering conditions.

Do you think it would be cost efficient to build a building as opposed to a tent-like greenhouse structure? I mean, in the long run, including heating?

Greenhouse is going to give you a lot of natural light and passive solar heat. You could do a wood burning heat source and maybe some solar water heaters too cut costs.

Wouldn't a wood heater create both a fire hazard and poisonous air in the greenhouse? Just wondering. Thanks for the ideas!

Would be to expensive to heat in winter.

If that is true (and I have no reason to doubt that it is, given your level of experience) then it is back to the drawing board. I will have to find a pool, or construct one, that I can fit in a basement.

Thanks for the info; you've been very helpful!

Is it possible to insulate it very well and then use mostly solar?

Just throwing ideas out there.

No you will need some type of electric or gas heat

Wood burning would have a vent for smoke/gases but only heat the space, not the water. You would still have to heat the water as well.
