Hello MFK...

Finally ran out of room in the house for another fish tank. So, am venturing outside and thought I'd set up a larger tank. Too much work to do something underground, so a tank above ground is an option. Got a 300 gallon livestock watering trough at the local ag supply store. It's galvanized steel. Won't ever rust. I have some Goldfish and Fathead minnows I'm growing out in a couple of indoor tanks. Will run this larger tank for the winter months and this spring will add the Goldfish and Fatheads. Will get someone to build a roof over it too. Something that will allow filtered light, so I can grow floating Water lettuce, Chinese evergreen and some Pothos, Nephthytis and Taro plants. Here are a couple of pics.

I'm subscribed and excited for more. Keep us posted about what you do :D.

Those galvanized troughs are not fish safe...u need to remove the galvanized layer on the inside and or coat with a fish safe epoxy/coating. An additional EPDM or other non permiable liner overtop will make it fish safe also.

Hello Wednesday...

That's interesting. I've heard you don't want to set the galvanized trough on a concrete surface, due to a potential chemical reaction with the steel and the chemicals in the concrete, but I figured if animals drink the water out of the galvanized tanks for years, the water would stay livable for the fish. I guess I'll find out pretty soon.

Galvanized steel contains zinc...zinc is tolerable for plants but not fish. They leech zinc into the water over time slowly killing ur fish. Theres plenty of articles on aquaponics forums as well as fish forums about the topic.

Thanks for the advice. After some research, I find that I can coat the inside of the tank with a product called "Pond Armor". Apparently, it's a non toxic apoxy liner that will cover the inside of the tank, so chemicals can't leach into the water. l think I'll go this route.

Nice, glad u found some more info on it. A grinder with wire brush attachment makes quick work to prep the surface for paint.
