Hi,

I have a 75g, with a 30g sump... Unfortunately the tank is in my bedroom, and I need the tank to be somewhat quiet...

The outflow keeps making a large SUCTION NOISE...like when your at the last bit of your soda with a straw. It is quite annoying when you are in bed.

Ive bought this tank fairly recent, and I had to switch the motor which is wayyy overload...about 1600GPH (great deal, and previous was broken). I put in a sponge on the inflow pipe to minimize the flow. It has worked successfully.

I did the same thing with the outflow (putting small sponge on pipe), but I have to CONSTANTLY (every few days) adjust the location of the sponge, given that debris will get sucked in. What that does unfortunately, the debris reduce the suction intake power, and tank gets overflowed. :nilly:

Is there anyway to remedy this by a more efficient method?

Thanks for any inputs

What type of overflow are you using?

If your overflow is draing too fast you can slow down and quiet the system with a ball or gate valve on the drain. You need to balance it so you are draining just a bit more than you are pumping.

got any pictures?

So you are still using the 1600GPH pump, just with a sponge over the return?

How big is the sponge on the intake/overflow and how dense is it? You just need a coarse pre-filter to keep big stuff out of the sump, the sump should be designed to filter the rest out. Is it the siphon break that is making the sucking noise, or the actual overflow intake?

Thanks for the response,

I do have a drilled tank...here are the pics;

I do try to have an equilibrium between inflow and outflow, but as previously stated, when using the sponge on the outflow to minimize the suction rate, the debris eventually gets build up. In effect, it causes it to reduce the suction rate even more.

FYI, the last pic is the outflow tube...where currently I have a sponge there; if I take out the sponge or even place it at the wrong end of the pipe, the pipe keeps making these very large suction sounds.

The sponge to me is a bandaid solution, it doesnt seem to be a longterm solution as I have to constantly readjust the placement of it.

can u fit a pvc U-shaped elbow on the overflow pipe? if you can do that drill a small hole on the top of it then you should be in business

The last pic looks like you are missing the top pieces of your standpipe. Looks like a megaflow durso standpipe but without the tee and strainer.

You might be able to fab a street elbow to a tee. Cap the top of the tee and drill a small hole to complete the standpipe.
