Output from the top or bottom?

Going to make my own filter but have a question. Do I want my output tube to come from the top or the bottom of the filter? Unlike the pictures(If you want to call them that, lol) The filter will hang from the back so the water wont have far to travel.

I would say the influent would be on the top so that when you take the lid off your filter the pre filter pad would be easiest to access.

Make sure the return hose is shorter
so you're not fighting a gravity feed.
