Just as an experiment I set up a tiny plastic planted tank (6" x 2.5" x 2") with a java moss rock and a tiny crypto. I stocked it with a few snails from my big tank and used a tiny dossage of excel to make the java moss grow faster. In a few hours 1 snail was floating dead at the topof the water and the other three were crawling above the water line. so is it possible to kill snails with an excel overdose?

I've never heard of that... I wouldn't think so though, isn't excel just a simply carbohydrate that is easily assimilated by plants? I don't see how that could kill snails... then again, I'm not sure how it kills algae

I use excel in a tank with many snails, and it doesn't seem to effect them.

Excel is kinda weird like that. I have had a half dose kill rams and pencilfish but a double dose not kill shrimp. If you add enough it probably will kill anything.

I've been dosing excel since I started and i've never had it kill snails. Only one time I had a problem when I dosed with flourish and my brother dosed with a little bit of iron and excel without me knowing. It created a film at the top and started 'choking' the fish. I didn't lose any but I know to do only one dose of anything at a time. Maybe it's because there wasn't a filter on the tank?

That's strange, I've always dosed everything all at once and never had this problem.

I have never heard of plant supplements killing snails.
