I read somewhere that when you have carnivorous fish it was a good idead to use a filter that pumped double the tank size, so if you have a 40 gallon youd use an 80 gallon pump. Is this true? And if so should I use this with bichirs?

the thinking behind this is that the food will be messier (on its way in and out) so yes its a good idea to up the filtration on this tank. however, you should have more turnover than that an hour. I would recommend an ac110 and a sponge filter for the tank

with big cats it is 10x change over and if you can do it for others fantastic...you can never have to much filtration...

ditto :iagree:

I have 2 AC110's in my 72gal + a sponge filter + airstone

b-4 I had a fluval204 as the 2nd filter but replaced it with another AC110, am quite satisfied. + price is reasonable for this kind of performance!

try www.kensfish.com or www.bigalsonline.com, found them with consistently better prices & shipping cost that won't kill you!

good luck!
