I know they say you can never have enough filtration but what noticable effects would over filtration have apart from less maintence?
At the moment i have a 500ltr tank with 2 filters with a combined 3500 l/h of filtration, with 30% weekly water cahange i keep my nitrates under 40. A FX5 has become availble to me which i am going to add to my tank which would double the amount of filtration in my tank. would i be able to expect better water conditions or smaller water changes?

better water conditions yes, less water changes no. no matter how many FX5s u put on ur tank, ur nitrate levels will always be the same with the same stock. plus, u need to remove fish hormones as well. keep up with ur water changes!

i was thinking along the same line....same stock, same nitrates. Would nitrates rise faster due to more bio media working twice as fast? Would double filtration allow for extra stock?

Double filtration will not allow for any extra stock. In fact, adding more filters can actually cause a rise in nitrates if you extend the filter maintenance proportionally longer.

The best method for maintaining the highest stocking level for a given size volume of water with a fixed WC schedule (e.g., weekly-50%) would be to use a filter for bio and a water pump for O2 circulation and to move the solid waste into one or two spots; then vacuum the solid waste off the bottom during the weekly WC.
