is there a such thing as over filtering a tank, therefore making it not good?

I dont think that it is possible to over filter a tank. My personal philosophy is the more filtration the better.

thnx cs

if you have so much flow that the fish cant swim then it's too much.

You only over-filter at the point you are filtering clean water. Otherwise you don't over-filter you just over-pressure your return water. If you run it into a sump first it will calm it down.

thanks to all u guys for the feedbacks

You can't over filter the water, in the strictest meaning of the words. The water will only filter to a particular degree of clean... having large filters will give you a longer filter cycle or allow you to overstock your tank (if you keep up with the other maintenance).

Over pumping is where you run into the most trouble, as has been said. I nearly cooked my fish that I had in a 110g. I ran a wet/dry with a 1200g/hr pump to get a ten turn overs per hour. The current was way too strong for my puffer so I throttled down to three turnovers per hour. The water heated beyond the scale of my thermometer to the point my puffer was gasping for air. I had some pin fish that didn't make it.

I am in the same dilemma, but I realized the only downside to overfiltration is buying the filter suited for a larger tank.
