can i just "slot" the top of my stand pipes, instead of having an overflow box? i have two 1.5" drains drilled through the back of the tank.

the aquarium is full now and i don't want to try and attach a full over flow box to the back glass.

Yep, this works well! You just want to make sure that the tank will not overflow if the slots get plugged with debris. I just made sure that the top of the pipe is lower than the top of the tank so if debris gets caught in the slots it will overflow over the top of the slots instead of the top of the tank.

I actually cut the slots in my pipe at an angle instead of perpendicular to the wall of the pipe. This induces a swirling motion in the water and a cyclone effect that is quieter than perpendicularly cut slots.
