Over Planting?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you are supplementing the proper amounts of ferts and co2 and lighting then there should be no problem until the plants overgrow each other. Basically when one plant gets too tall and casts shadows over plants that need intense lighting. I wouldn't worry about it too much so long as you clip and supplement your tank regularly.

Basically what I was getting at...

Well...this is what I have in the tank. It's a 20g. I was thinking of getting maybe 5 more plants ( 2 Tropica Ferns, 2 Kyotos, and an Amazon Sword...sorry, don't know the scientic names)

And I was thinking of removing the 2 tall plants in the back.

Well I am going to assume you are shopping at Petco. First thing is that java fern has to be planted on a rock or wood. Next those two bamboos on the left will die being a non-aquatic plant. When they start to look sickly just pull them out and put them in some dirt. you will be fine leaving the plants you have in when you add the new plants. Word of advice is to just wait. Let you current plants mature, and you will have plenty to work with. Amazon swords get very large, and need an incredible amount of space, which will take half of your 20 H. I would advise against getting one. There are several dwarf species of sword that will do fine in a 20. That java fern you have will also get quite large, and will also give you plenty of daughter plants which can be pulled off, and rooted onto a piece of wood.

You beat me to it, said everything I was going to. Especially: 1) the plant on the left is non-aquatic, 2) amazon sword will get too big (mine is 20inches wide, 20 inches tall). I've never heard of Kyotos though, dont' know what those are.

Kyotos are a grass that is also non aquatic I believe. It is sold at petco in little tubes. It has an intense dark green leave like an anubia nana.

Thanks for the advice! I really appreciate it. I love the live plants and I hope I'm doing good. Ok...so I'll stay away from the Sword and Kyoto and I'll remove the 2 small non-aquatic plants.
