Does Adding too much prime to new tank water have any ill effects? I always am a little generous when putting in prime just to be safe. This may be pretty diluted when working with 100+ gallon changes, but what about when your changing a couple cups out of a betta tank and you add enough prime for a gallon or 2?
Prime makes a mini bottle with a dripper top... I believe that bottle suggests 2 drops per gallon (though check the bottle or Seachems site to confirm)...
There are tons of personal experiences where hobbyists have accidently grossly overdosed a tank with Prime and I've yet to hear of an incident that ended in any notable problems. I personally dropped an open 500 ml bottle into a 75 gal tank and it took me well over a minute to remove it (on a step ladder with my hands in another tank). I did a 50% water change and all was well.
I've corresponded with Seachem on this and related topics several times concerning Prime and have done a lot of "independant studies" trying to understand Prime on a chemical level (I'm a closet nerd, shhhh). From what I understand it would take A LOT of Prime, meaning more than 100x the recommended dosage, to do any notable harm. Even at these levels I couldn't determine a specific chemical or bio chemical issue, but quite obviously at some point too much becomes too much...
In short, it would take a real goof up to add too much and even then it's most likely still harmelss.........
Naturally Seachem is limited on where to draw the line, as they need to protect themselves from lawsuits. To get Seachem to reselease real life suggestions on what is too much, everyone reading this shoot three lawyers (no offense to the lawyer/hobbysits on this site, I'm sure you are the good ones )
