its it possible to have too much skimmer for a tank? i have a 54g tank and an asm g3 skimmer i want to setup, i think it would be fine right?

I never heard of it being an issue but wow a ( ASM G3) for a 54g tank you'll never have a problem lol

Skimmers pick up Dissolved protiens. Bad ones not good ones. Enjoy the super skimmed tank, should keep everything very healthy. You probly dont even need filtration if you have enough live rock
you can only over skim in certain situations... if you have to add element and amino suppliments to a tank to keep coral growth and color up, or if you're medicating a tank you can easily over skim (removing what it is that you're adding)
if you have a normal tank that doesn't require any special car (FO, FOWLR, or most reef tanks) there should be, really, no real threat of over skimming
