I recently have been feeding my male Motoro a few small chunks several times a day. This seems to have kicked his metabolism into overdrive, because I can pretty much wait an hour, throw a few more chunks in, and hes on them like he hasnt eaten in days. I guess what I am getting at is am I overfeeding him? Hes a 8-9"er and eats over a whole jumbo freshwater shrimp a day. HE looks nice and thick, and has the J-lo booty going on at all times. Is there a drawback to feeding him constantly as long as hes eating it? I never leave food in the tank for more than 3 minutes if hes uninterested in it.

rays love to eat!

some say over feeding can lead to fatty liver disease

Be cautious not to overfeed, it is very unhealthy for the ray this way.
I only feed my rays 70% full (very subtle hump on the back after meals) 5 days a week. As for the J-lo booty going on at all times, I guess that does mean you're overfeeding him a bit, in nature, rays don't have the luxury of a full meal everyday, therefore they stay rather slim and streamlined.

Ok ill make sure to scale the proportion I feed him to his growth, thanks for the heads up. Is it just me or do they seem more voracious if you give them several smaller feedings as opposed to a few decent sized feedings?

Mine seem voracious regardless...

At that size one jumbo shimp a day isn't overfeeding. This is where your male will really hit it's last bit of gowth and it will want to feed alot more. If your feeding over the course of the day instead of once like some people it will allways look like a little jlo instead of a big jlo that goes down. Sounds like your doing a good job keep going what your doing.

I'm not sure how big a jumbo shrimp is but IMO it is best to let your ray go flat b4 another meal, it allows them to thoroughly digest their food & increase the utilization of food, prevents constipation, keeps them active and keeps the water clean. It's my bit of experience through the years...

my rays are lazy and only move around at food time

The shrimp I get are 8-12 count per pound. So 1-1.5 a day based on his feeding habits should be good? I dont care if he produces more waste because I feed him more often. If you didnt want to be diligent with water changes, shouldnt have gotten a ray, my 2 cents.
