Ny to Fl and Back Again
This might be a long time commig but about a 8 months ago I set up my 270. It was my first tank with an overflow and wetdry system. I was supposed to get help setting it up from the person who sold it to me. That bird flew. With a few questions to the LFS I figured it out. I still have a few questions though that might be silly might not.

#1- in the overflow box is there supposed to be any type of media there? Such as balls or kitchen scrubbies??

#2-I have read several posts about the kitchen srubbies and like the idea so I got some. I put them in my sump on top of the bio balls. Would anyone say that the scrubbies are better than the balls? From what i know about tank setups and bio filtration it would kinda seem to me that the scrubbies have more surface area than the balls but im not sure since the balls are specially designed for hording bacteria. \

Any info is very very much appreciated

#1. Normally there is only prefilters in the overflow box. Some overflow boxes are designed I suppose that you could put some scrubbies or balls in there, but you would want to make sure there would be NO WAY for them to clog or restrict the flow.

#2. Lots of people use them, especially in DIY sumps because they are cheap. But yes they do provide more surface area. But you really cant go wrong with the bio-ball or scrubbies.

I am curious when you say prefilters what do you mean?:nilly: :nilly: :nilly: I have two long 1.5 drainpipes. I didnt know if it was common practice but I figured I could fill that area up with scrubbies. It just seems like alot of dead space. Thanx 4 ur help

Alright, well in my overflow box, I have two U tubes that syphon the water from the tank into the box. Then I have two 1 1/4" lines that run down to the sump, on these lines in the overflow box they have a coarse sponge prefilter.

Thats cool. When I setuo my tank I asked the guy at my LFS and he told me I would probably flood the house by doing that so I backed off. I wanted to do every good choice posible cause I know my tank is a bit overstocked. I use the felt in my W/D but it slows the flow of my water cause I absolutely hate changing the filter. I do my water changes religously though.

Pix are worth a 1000 words..
only difference between your overflow and this one is,
the body of this overflow does the same job as the "J" tube on yours.
.............. overflow showing tank side "SCREEN" and "PRE-FILTERS".

Heres what im thinking...Im gonna fill my overflow box up with scrubbies. From what I have been reading as long as the scrubbies do not interfere with my filter in any manner then it should be worth the work or at least it couldnt hurt. If this idea is in anyway not a good one someone please post a reply before I mess something up! I am thinking i might put eggcrate on top of the scrubbies to limit the chance of anything going wrong.
