Ok I just drilled my 150 gallon (I forgot to add my new set up to the sig i'll do it right away) I put in two 1.5" bulkheads and they are both in the same overflow basket. The basket is 12" long, 3" deep and 10" tall. I am running a 55 gallon Sump and a quite one 4000 pump which pumps 1017gph. It has been running about 4 hours now and looks like I'm not so bad a plumber. Nothing is leaking and all is well. Although I have noticed one thing that I don't like. Every 10-30 seconds I hear a slurping from the bulkheads in the overflow basket and then it's followed by a large bubble in the sump(I have the hoses go directly to the bottom of the tank to stop the sound of crashing water, thats ok right????). What can be causing this to happen???? should I have added something to the bulkheads on the inside of the tank???? I just left them flush assuming water would just flow into them. A friend of mine set his up like that and has no problems. Any help would be great this sound is driving me up the wall because I am so paranoid somethign will leak and hearing that noise makes my heart stop everytimes lol Does home insurance cover aquarium floods lol????

it sounds like bubbles are building up and them forcing themselves out all at once. the same thing happens when i leave the python in the tank during WC's and it starts to slip around just check their arrangement and see if you can make the tubes as short as possible.

3 posts same question????????????????????????????????

another possibility is that the return pump may be a little over powered as it could be returning water back to the tank faster than its being drained out..

As chris def says, try inserting a small bor air tube into the drain and you should get it to a spot where the air and water balance out..another alternitive is to tee off your return and send some water back to the sump which you can control with a ball valve and then you can balance the flow..

Just an opinion of course..

If your return line is just gravity feeding into the sump, the issue is definitly air lock related. I would either run an airline (like suggested) or maybe use a verticle T on the back side of the bulk head and a stand pipe off the top of that to a point higher than the water surface. That sounds more confusing than it is, I'll try and post a pic soon to explain it better.

i made my own DIY for the same problem, I capped the top of the gravity tube and the drilled a hole and put a airline down it and it made it quiet

You will need to build a Durso StandPipe. It will allow you to tune your overflow. Here is a link. If you drilled the side then you will have to modify it abit.
