Overflow benefits

I have a 125g with two overflow boxes on the corners and was thinking about removing them for more space in general speaking is it more beneficial to have overflow boxes or to just have the plumbing with caps on the pipe to prevent fish from having a free water ride without a ticket thanks for your help in advance

I have one already set up everything is up and running just thinking about removing them because I've seen sump with pinning before that didn't have overflow box but was curious it changes anything
