Can you use an overflow box to supply water to a canister filter?
I know it is not a good idea but if the in tank glass overflow box was filled with extra water it could work.
Has anyone tried this?

Yes your right Foldem.
I am planning a new wet/dry sump for my 260g and have a spare 2.5'x35"x46".
I have just got home from getting the glass baffels cut.
The the new sump may not fit under the stand so as fall back plan I thought maybe a canister might be faster and easier to install.
I am going to build the sump anyway and not risk the canister as an Eheim 2260 is not worth risking.
I will post the DIY sump in a new tread and I am going to test the fit tomorrow.

Are you talking about an in-tank drilled overflow box, or are you talking about an HOB overflow box?

If it is a drilled box, a canister will work.

Seems like it would be fine if it were a drilled box. Dangerous other wise.

I would be worried about the siphon breaking and then your canister will be running dry.
that's no different than the pump in a sump running dry if the siphon breaks.

Yes, it is a glass in-tank drilled overflow box.
