Overflow box noise

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That depends on where the noise is originating. Is it the lid of the box or the impeller? Or is it air trapped inside?

overflow boxes do not have impellers or a way to trap air... ?

anyway.. yes.. theres a lot of things that can be done.. depending on how your overflow is set up.. there is not one final answer that coveres every type of setup so without knowing how its setup and what noise you are having an issue with no one can give you a real answer...

more details please :)

what type of overflow
-internal side/back overflow box
drilled on the side/drilled on the bottom
-hob overflow
-diy overflow

what type of noise
-flushing/bathtub draining noise
-waterfall noise
-bubbling/gurgling noise
-is the noise in the overflow or is it in the sump

it's a dual overflow box with 2 siphons in it that hangs over the back. It's a 180 gallon tank. The noise is coming from the overflow box not the sump and it's the bathtub draining noise.

theres a few ways to deal with this... rallysman has an amazing setup that was prettymuch 100% silent as well as a full DIY with video.. its somewhere around here you might want to PM him if you cant find it by searching

my solution to this was a quick and ugly but it worked great.. i knew my setup was temporary so looks were not really the issue..
basicly its a dual dorso stand pipe (search if you dont know).. however due to the size of the chamber in the overflow box a bit of modification was needed to make it fit..

if you cant tell its a 1" straight piece of pvc with two holes cut into the sides (i used a dremel)
with 2 3/4" elbows cut to fit (also used a dremel)
i just used painters tape till i had it cut apart enough to get it to fit (trial and error).. i like painters tape for stuff like this because #1 its cheap #2 it does not leave glue behind once removed

the tape at the top is for a vent hole which prevents it from making a syphon.. other than that.. the pics are pretty self explanitory

the slits on the bottom allowed me to cram it down into the hole/drain in the overflow.. for unknown reasons my 1" pvc was different than the 1" piece that came with it....

i also had chunks of sponge cramed around it because i have very stupid fish in that tank and they enjoyed ended up in the sump.... the sponge also helped with the waterfall noise that happend in the tank... either way by the time i was done with it the pump was louder than the overflow...
