I am finally about to start drilling my 75gallon tank for the sump. I just have one question, should I drill the tank and just put in a 90º elbow/strainer or put in a drilled overflow box? Are there any benefits of having an overflow box that the elbow/strainer cannot provide? I'm looking at using a Danner MagDrive 7 pump with 1" piping if I go the route of just the strainer or there's an overflow box at g-h.com that's rated at 700gph, which I think I'd still be able to use the same pump for..

The overflow box provides better surface skimming than a strainer equipped elbow. I'm not sure from your post if you plan on drilling the hole for either solution or just the elbow with strainer.

I would plan on drilling for which ever way I go, and I'm almost confident the sides of my aquarium are glass and not tempered.

You could drill the glass and then put in an internal overflow only for surface skimming. www. glass-holes.com

Zennzzo could give you more info on those.

BTW a 75 shouldn't be tempered, but make sure you check just to be sure.

Yeah the overflow I was looking at is at glass-holes, how is Zennzzo affiliated with them? or does he just own the products?

Also, are you saying to put in the overflow and another return or to just use the overflow box as it will help with surface skimming? Also what is surface skimming, does it just mean that it is able to clean a larger area of the surface water?

Surface straining is simply just that. Getting the stuff off of the top. The overflow would be a bit more effective that just a PVC pipe as it would cover more area. Plus, they look a lot better.

Zennzzo just bought them at one time. I have never messed with them so I was just offering someone that might know a little better than I.

It is a lot harder to clog a skimmer box than a single point input even with a stainer. The sides of the tank are unlikely to be tempered, the bottom may be.

Yeah on the bottom of the tank it says tempered do not drill, but I'm pretty sure it's only talking about the bottom as the sides seem to thick to be tempered from what I have read about it.

You can make tempered glass of any thickness. If the bottom says tempered do not drill, most likely it's the whole tank.

If it's a top fin or allglass 75g, it is tempered.
