I'm getting sick of my over flow box that I have for my eshopp WD-300CS which is on my 125g. It keeps sucking up my smaller fish and at times they die. Should I just go back to canister filter?

Try a CPR overflow or drill the tank. CPR overflows are a bit expensive but well worth the money of course drilling would be your best bet.
