I have a small problem with my overflow. It keeps sucking in my fish. I have a few tiger barbs in my 180 gal that have been added after a week of fishless cycle. My question is what can I put there to prevent fish from being sucked in? I tried a mesh net but that just slows down the flow which makes the water rise. I was thinking of siliconing some eggcrate in the PVC tube/overflow. The over flow is a 1.5 inch PVC elbow. Any opinions? Thanks

Larry

on the comb of my overflow there is about 1/2" on each side that i block up with foam and i also use a block of foam wedged just after to prevent fish getting sucked in again. the block also acts like a pre-filter as well.

Overflow type filters are better suited for larger fish. Obviously you know why. I use to have Kullie loaches and they constantly got sucked up. I tried that sponge method and it works but it clogs very fast, always a day sooner than I anticipate :D
Be careful with pre-filters on your intakes............

I have fry fish in my overflow weirs all the time. I used to try to get them out at first with some success.

Now I just leave em till they get some size or go for a ride down the durso and I check the socks when I clean them. I pulled a 1-1/2" mbuna out today and have it inna grow out tank with some fossies.

Ugh that stinks. I guess I can't start with small fish. That stinks because I was planning on growing out a few. Hopefully my angels won't get sucked up.

my sponge merely comes after the comb, it in no way impedes or covers the drain holes in the outlet pipe. should the sponge block up so much that it stops flow them the water level will simply flow over the sponge, in my set up anyway.

How about a not so pretty fishing net draped over the over flow. maybe a black one to hide it but then it could prevent the fish getting in and still let full flow down tubes.

Maybe use some silicone to coat teh net. and help stiffen it up so it creates almost a balloon over teh intake.

2" overflow on my 125g/100g top/bottom system, my solution? put small fish in sump. easy as pie.
